Roland MDX Customizing

Replacement of the standard spindle with steel collet chucks.
 

High Speed Spindle

Proxxon MICROMOT 50/E: Electronic speed control enables the selection of speeds from 5,000 to 20,000 rpm.

I'm cutting right out of my modeling software (Rhino) and use a custom postprocessor that turns off the spindle.

With Modela 4 you can save your job as .prn file and edit it with a text editor. You have to search for the commands: !MC1; These turns the spindle on. If you replace it by: !MC0; then the spindle will stay off. But be careful what you do there. Ofcourse all on your own risk!

Rotary Axis for MDX

The table movement (Y) is converted into a rotary movement by a rack and gear. The idea to this solution was posted to the Roland Forum by Joules Beech.


The transmission is 100mm Y-movement for a full rotation (360°).

The rack mounting plate is slited and slightly bend to ensure a constant contact.

Rack and gear are covered to avoid swarf getting at it.
